Back Online… At Last!
They always say that you never know how much you appreciate something till it’s gone, and recently, that’s what happened with my Internet connection.
The ‘station has effectively been in a state of hibernation for the past few months, as I haven’t been able to get online to wake it from its slumber. The details of my problems are going to follow in a later post, as I have learnt much about the state of Internet access in the UK, and just what the companies that provide it can, and are, getting away with. Until then, all you need to know is that I am back, thanks to a new Linksys Router, and more importantly, a hell of a lot of perseverance on my Dads part.
Over the past few months there have been a lot of changes in my life, and that’s going to be reflected on the ‘station. I have a new design coming, which hopefully will remove the mental blockage provided by the current layout which encourages long posts, an issue that Derek discussed recently. I’ve also come to realise that the saying “every day is a school day” is definitely true, as I have learnt a hell of a lot in a whole lot of areas since January, and I hope to share some of that new-found knowledge with you.

Google Sketchup is an AWESOME application. I’m not at all familiar with all the features of the app but my younger brother often shows me some of his work. A fantastic tool for anyone who is interested in architectural design looking for a simple outlet to get ideas into.

I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t taken Google Sketchup very seriously at first, thinking it was just a simple tool for Google Earth, but from the short time I have used it I am blown away by the simplicity of its operation: The program works as you would ‘expect’ it to.
The biggest problem with most 3D packages is their high barrier to entry, in that they are so bloody complicated! Each one requires you to learn a slightly different control model even though they are all based on the same 3D concepts of meshes, b-splines and n.u.r.b.s. And if you are thinking ‘what is he on about’ with regards to my last sentence then that’s my point.
So, a very well deserved pat on the back for the Sketchup team, and I look forward to getting to know it better.
