9 Days

I can’t believe it’s been 9 days since I last logged on here, but time has flown. It seems that the days fly by faster than when I was at University, although perhaps that is because I am focused on the future rather than the now. I don’t know if that is a good thing or not, but I am determined not to fall into the trap of finding a comfortable job somewhere to tide me by, and get lazy when it comes to trying to kick-start myself a career in design. To that end, everything I do ‘today’ is with a view to ‘tomorrow’. It’s not a particularly fun way of going about life, but let’s face it, that’s what everyone has to do from time to time, and I am lucky to have the support at home to enable me to get on with stuff without worrying about keeping a roof over my head etc.

It’s funny really, as it hasn’t really sunk in that I have finished Uni, as my life hasn’t changed that much, it still feels like the summer holidays, but I guess it will soon become more apparent as all my friends here at home have are moving away just as I return after four years up in Dundee. All the best to you guys, you know who you are!

In other news, Over the past nine days:

  • I have also decided that after years of defending windows against the hoards of apple fan boys, I am going to give in and embrace all that is Mac. Since the days of my 386, I have almost enjoyed the constant hassle that is living with Windows, but these days I find it more and more of a chore to put up with its tantrums and mindless design flaws. It would be bad enough, but when I have my desktop, laptop, and my Dad’s PC to contend with, it’s just more Mickeysoft than any one person should have to deal with.

My original concerns about not being able to use my CAD software have gone out of the window now boot camp is on the scene, and I just want something that works. Can you imagine having to piss about fixing your car engine for hours every time you wanted to take a ride somewhere. That’s what I feel like life with Windows is like at the moment, and I have approximately 0% faith that any of these issues will be rectified in Vista, so I feel now is a good time to make the switch.

  • Work started on going pink for October, and I decided to build a new theme rather than just ‘pinkifying’ my existing site. I’ve stuck with what I know - K2, and gone for a new layout, which whilst being nothing new, presented one or two interesting challenges for me and allowed me to learn a little more about K2. It’s pretty much done, and just needs a couple of tweaks over the weekend.

  • Finally I managed to get a Judgement against Just3G so hopefully I will get to see some money from them pretty soon. I am also back at that time of year when I am looking for a new phone contract and as per usual the bloody things are about as easy to understand as quantum physics.

  • I have officially given up with iTunes 7 and it’s never ending bad behaviour. Coverflow is just damn sexy, but unfortunately iTunes doesn’t play my tunes without adding it’s own garbled mess in there. The sound somewhat resembles the sound a robotic cat would make in a washing machine at a drum and bass club. Not cool. The performance of video in iTunes 7 also makes me think you need a Mac Pro - or two to get it to run smoothly. I’d be interested to know if it uses 99% of the system ram and CPU on a Mac Pro too. Winamp, I am sorry I ever left you. Sort it out Apple, this isn’t what I want to see when I am thinking of switching!

  • Richard ‘The Hamster’ Hammond is up and walking, although a full recovery could be a long way off, I hope to see him being rescued off the back of a sinking VW camper/narrowboat again in the future.

  • The date for 9rules Round 5 has been announced and I am considering submitting the ‘station. I have a great deal of respect for the 9rules network, and it’s members and it’s great to see such a positive and influential network thriving. Whilst the Innovation Station is on its ‘maiden voyage’ if you like, I currently have a drafts folder bulging with upcoming posts which I think will give the web community a different perspective on design. Since I started writing here, the 9rules network and its members have really been an inspiration to me and it would mean a lot to be a part of the community.

Hope you get your cashback from Just3G.

They owe me £280 and seem to have closed for business just about a week ago (useless web site and telephone help line)!

I reckon the owner will act like the Tulip company and open up again under another trading name.  He will then claim “limited liability” and refuse to honour judgements against the previous company.

Do you know any way of combating this technique?
