America Is F*cked
21st Feb 2009Unfortunately I have no idea how I came across this video, as it has been minimised in my dock for a few days, but it makes for fantastic viewing. Aaron Draplin is passionate, to say the least, about the rich heritage of american graphic design.
It’s only fair to pass on the warning from the Vimeo page - Draplin uses some quite strong language to reinforce his point!
Affording Cheap

Cheap always cost you more in the end. That’s why I can’t afford to buy cheap. Can you?
MobileMe: File sharing… at last
13th Feb 2009Turns out Apple have finally enabled the much publicised file sharing feature on MobileMe. Considering I really love Dropbox these days, I didn’t think it would be something I’d use, however there are a couple of useful features. Unlike Dropbox you can set a time limit on the availability of your download, and also password protect it, which could come in handy. I also like the fact sending a pre-formatted email is super easy.
Unfortunately you have to be using the web interface to access all of the sharing features, which is less than ideal, especially when you consider that sharing a file in Dropbox is as easy as adding it to the public folder and using the contextual menu to grab the URL.
Apple need to release an update ASAP to enable these features in the Finder (and Windows Explorer). Then, and only then will the iDisk become a useful feature to the majority of MobileMe users.
Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
11th Feb 2009
I can’t wait to see this in the upcoming Transformers sequel, and I reckon they have really nailed the styling. I especially love the split rear window reminiscent of the ‘63 Corvette. It also reminds me of the Bertone styled Alfa Romeo BAT 9, which is no bad thing in my mind.
See more of it over at Carscoop.
9 year old iPhone developer
10th Feb 2009Impressive stuff, but not completely sure what all the excitement is about. After all, we have seen many cases of young children with amazing language or mathematical skills due to being immersed in a subject from a very early age.
I’m off to fire up Xcode and start playing with the iPhone SDK. Feeling inspired!
10 Principles
10th Feb 2009‘10 Principles’ sounds so much more sustainable than ‘10 Tips’. I must admit, I hate ‘top 10/20/50/whatever’ lists as they smell a bit like get rich quick schemes to me. Hard work is the only thing that will provide the propulsion you need to get anywhere in life.

Tools should be enablers, not disablers.
Agreed. Via AisleOne
Clever Dropular
10th Feb 2009
Loving Dropular, mainly dude to the fact I got an account, unlike FFFFound. Also loving their terminology - i.e. the use of ‘pinched ’ when referencing sources!
Dropular turns out to be clever little bugger too, and knows to watch out for Flickr’s Spaceball.gif image when you pinch from Flickr!
Pretty Loaded
10th Feb 2009Big Spaceship Have created this awesome tribute to the Flash Preloader. Via ANidea.
People Talk
04th Feb 2009Bobbie Johnson @ Guardian.co.uk“
Social media is people. People talk about stuff. The end.
Being remarkable
31st Jan 2009Seth Godin“
Being noticed is not the same as being remarkable. Running down the street naked will get you noticed, but it won’t accomplish much. It’s easy to pull off a stunt, but not useful.
What a supprise, Adobe are ripping off UK customers
04th Apr 2007Judging by those figures, that’s one way of putting it. What a joke.
Never mind my earlier post; if you want to get rich, don’t live in Britain!
The Great Wall of China
01st Apr 2007Can you get past the great (fire)wall of China?
Crit Buns!
24th Mar 2007Why oh why did I not know about these when I was at Uni! This is one of those products you wish you had thought of yourself, and is so obvious looking back. Simplicity always wins over, although as we all know, the simplest solutions are the hardest to design.
Want to get rich?
24th Mar 2007The key it would seem, is to stop being so frightened of the consequences and get on with it.
The Machine is Us/ing Us
16th Feb 2007I think this video just about covers it.
Le Grand Content
16th Feb 2007Feelings, Mistakes, and Butts. These are things we dare not bare in public.
Quite True.
Apple iPhone
09th Jan 2007Why bother bringing out several devices which we have all been waiting for with much anticipation when you can chuck all those features in one device? It’s not April 1, is it?
Amazing ‘Capstan Table’
28th Dec 2006To quote the website:
Please understand that this is an extremely special piece of furniture, of exceptional quality and design, it is not for everyone by a very very long way and can only be afforded by the lucky few of us with exceptional wealth.
You need to watch the videos to truly appreciate the fantastic design of the Capstan Table.
Pay what you think it’s worth
27th Dec 2006Time has an interesting article on two restaurants that are starting a bit of a trend where instead of having fixed price menus, diners are invited to pay what they think their meal is worth or what they can afford, and believe it or not, the concept appears to be working!
nau
27th Dec 2006This great video from Nau discusses the process they go through to create their fantastic apparel, and the issues that are important to them. Nau is a one of a kind company, making being green not only cool, but practical to boot.
2006 Russo-Baltique Impression
27th Dec 2006The Russo-Baltique ‘Impression’ is sure to make an impression on your bank balance, but if you have the cash sitting around, and like to be different, then this is one car that will definitely make you stand out.
Casino Royale Title Sequence
27th Dec 2006A really interesting article on the Casino Royale title sequence from Digit. When I first saw them, I have to say I was a bit disappointed, but after reading the article and seeing them again, I have to say the work of Framestore CFC has won me over.
Furoshiki Laptop Wrap
27th Dec 2006The Furoshiki Laptop ‘Wrap’ borrows from the principles of Furoshiki and is a fantastic alternative to the simple laptop sleeve that every man and his dog has these days. I wouldn’t mind one for the times when my Wack-O-Phone is too much.
The Magic Whiteboard
19th Dec 2006Okay so it’s not magic but this is most definitely one of the best videos I have ever seen on You Tube!

Redefining Scale
02nd Dec 2006Look at the truck, then look at the picture of the truck in the mine. Just insane.
Serious Sampling
16th Nov 2006Lasse Gjertsen has some top notch video editing skills and a rather unconventional method of making music.
trioBike
16th Nov 2006Whilst this thing costs more than a good second hand small car, and is slightly ridiculous in its ‘push cart’ guise, the trioBike is aimed at the design savvy, environmentally concious young families who understand looking cool and being green comes at a price. The ingenious unit can be easily converted from a carrier bike to just a bike or push-cart with no tools necessary. The trioBike is a realistic green alternative to driving for short-distance trips.
Papervision 3D
15th Nov 2006Check out the preview for the new Open Source Papervision 3D engine for flash, which will be released this December.
Flickr Satellite
13th Nov 2006You take lots of pictures and you’d like to have a simple way to share them with family and friends. You’d like to have a website to post these images on. You need a way to sort the photos in sets or portfolios… maybe even tag them with keywords? Flickr is great, but you’d like to customize the look and presentation?
If you say yes to the above, then Satellite is for you.
Know your logos
07th Nov 2006They are everywhere and anywhere, but just how well do you know your logos?
Vista Packaging
02nd Nov 2006Well, Microsoft must have taken heed of the chatter surrounding the comical iPod packaging video, as ‘the kid’s done good’ with the new Vista packaging.
Firefox 2.0 has arrived.
24th Oct 2006Despite earlier false-start postings on the net announcing the arrival of the next version of Firefox and linking to various FTP mirrors, Firefox 2.0 has now been officially released.
Sony Bravia Advert
23rd Oct 2006If you haven’t been lucky enough to catch the new Sony Bravia advert on TV, it’s now available on a Special Sony mini-site which was launched alongside the first Bravia advert, in which 250,000 power balls cascaded through the streets of San Francisco.
Jonathan Yuen Portfolio
23rd Oct 2006Jonathan’s Portfolio is quite possibly the best flash based portfolio I have ever come across on the web.
Whilst I moved away from flash a long time ago in favour of web standards, flash can still be a great tool for building websites, as long as it is used correctly, and this is a fantastic example of flash being put to good use. Rather than being just a container for his portfolio, Jonathan’s site is a voyage of intrigue and discovery in itself.
Amazing Technical Illustration
23rd Oct 2006Kevin Hulsey does fantastic technical cutaway illustrations, that take many hundreds if hours to create. The immense level of detail his drawings contain can be seen in this fullsize sample.

17th Oct 2006I first came across this project around this time last year when Jon was showing us a few things in Processing”, and it’s a really great use of the Processing software, and I see that the data has now been used to create composited video in After Effects and Maya. Remarkable.

Tron
09th Oct 2006CSS selectors made easy.
05th Oct 2006Thank you Roger Johansson! Thanks to his very simple three part guide, I finally understand some of the more obtuse aspects of CSS selectors.
Ahoy Jim Lad
05th Oct 2006Arrr ye salty seadogs! International speak like a pirate day may have been and gone for another year, but this video can be enjoyed for its educational value all year round.
And don’t forget, “the gruffness of the pirates voice can be approximated by taking a large drink of rum just prior to speech”.
Redundant Acronym Syndrome, syndrome
16th Sep 2006Just how many times have you fallen foul of this?

... there is something predatory in the act of taking a picture. To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed.
