WhatTheFont iPhone App

MyFonts' 'WhatTheFont' tool is incredibly useful to someone whose mind is not a typeface encyclopaedia, unlike some designers I know. It has really helped me out a few times in the past, and now there's an iPhone app, which is seriously quick and works just as well as the online version.

America Is F*cked

Unfortunately I have no idea how I came across this video, as it has been minimised in my dock for a few days, but it makes for fantastic viewing. Aaron Draplin is passionate, to say the least, about the rich heritage of american graphic design.

It’s only fair to pass on the warning from the Vimeo page - Draplin uses some quite strong language to reinforce his point!

Affording Cheap

Cheap always cost you more in the end. That’s why I can’t afford to buy cheap. Can you?

Turns out Apple have finally enabled the much publicised file sharing feature on MobileMe. Considering I really love Dropbox these days, I didn’t think it would be something I’d use, however there are a couple of useful features. Unlike Dropbox you can set a time limit on the availability of your download, and also password protect it, which could come in handy. I also like the fact sending a pre-formatted email is super easy.

Unfortunately you have to be using the web interface to access all of the sharing features, which is less than ideal, especially when you consider that sharing a file in Dropbox is as easy as adding it to the public folder and using the contextual menu to grab the URL.

Apple need to release an update ASAP to enable these features in the Finder (and Windows Explorer). Then, and only then will the iDisk become a useful feature to the majority of MobileMe users.

Chevrolet Corvette

I can’t wait to see this in the upcoming Transformers sequel, and I reckon they have really nailed the styling. I especially love the split rear window reminiscent of the ‘63 Corvette. It also reminds me of the Bertone styled Alfa Romeo BAT 9, which is no bad thing in my mind.

See more of it over at Carscoop.

Impressive stuff, but not completely sure what all the excitement is about. After all, we have seen many cases of young children with amazing language or mathematical skills due to being immersed in a subject from a very early age.

I’m off to fire up Xcode and start playing with the iPhone SDK. Feeling inspired!

10 Principles

‘10 Principles’ sounds so much more sustainable than ‘10 Tips’. I must admit, I hate ‘top 10/20/50/whatever’ lists as they smell a bit like get rich quick schemes to me. Hard work is the only thing that will provide the propulsion you need to get anywhere in life.

Tools should be enablers, not disablers.

Agreed. Via AisleOne

Clever Dropular

Dropular

Loving Dropular, mainly dude to the fact I got an account, unlike FFFFound. Also loving their terminology - i.e. the use of ‘pinched ’ when referencing sources!

Dropular turns out to be clever little bugger too, and knows to watch out for Flickr’s Spaceball.gif image when you pinch from Flickr!

Being remarkable

Being noticed is not the same as being remarkable. Running down the street naked will get you noticed, but it won’t accomplish much. It’s easy to pull off a stunt, but not useful.

Why oh why did I not know about these when I was at Uni! This is one of those products you wish you had thought of yourself, and is so obvious looking back. Simplicity always wins over, although as we all know, the simplest solutions are the hardest to design.

Please understand that this is an extremely special piece of furniture, of exceptional quality and design, it is not for everyone by a very very long way and can only be afforded by the lucky few of us with exceptional wealth.

You need to watch the videos to truly appreciate the fantastic design of the Capstan Table.

trioBike

Whilst this thing costs more than a good second hand small car, and is slightly ridiculous in its ‘push cart’ guise, the trioBike is aimed at the design savvy, environmentally concious young families who understand looking cool and being green comes at a price.  The ingenious unit can be easily converted from a carrier bike to just a bike or push-cart with no tools necessary. The trioBike is a realistic green alternative to driving for short-distance trips.

Jonathan Yuen Portfolio

Jonathan’s Portfolio is quite possibly the best flash based portfolio I have ever come across on the web.

Whilst I moved away from flash a long time ago in favour of web standards, flash can still be a great tool for building websites, as long as it is used correctly, and this is a fantastic example of flash being put to good use. Rather than being just a container for his portfolio, Jonathan’s site is a voyage of intrigue and discovery in itself.

On Photography

... there is something predatory in the act of taking a picture. To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed.
